Easy Houseplants to Grow That Double as Gorgeous Decor

Posted on March 10, 2024November 9, 2024 by Anjali Shah

If you’re anything like me, you probably love filling your home with cozy, beautiful things—whether it’s comfy throw blankets, chic candles, or… plants! Houseplants have a special place in my heart, not only because they add such a fresh, calming vibe, but also because they can transform any room into a lush, inviting sanctuary. Plus, many plants are easier to care for than you might think.

If you’re new to the plant life or simply want to expand your collection without too much fuss, I’ve got you covered. Here are my favorite, easy-to-grow houseplants that do double duty as stunning decor.

1. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

This one is an absolute classic, and for good reason! Snake plants are practically indestructible. They thrive on neglect (seriously!), which makes them perfect for plant newbies or anyone who doesn’t have the time to tend to their greenery 24/7. With its tall, upright leaves and striking striped pattern, the snake plant instantly adds a sleek, modern touch to any space.

I love placing mine in a minimalist white or terracotta planter to let its bold shape stand out. Whether you pop it in your living room or bedroom, it brings that natural vibe without any hassle.

Care tip: Snake plants are super low-maintenance. Water them every couple of weeks (less in winter) and make sure the soil dries out between waterings. They can handle low light, but they’ll look their best with some indirect sunlight.

2. Philodendron

Philodendrons come in so many varieties, from trailing vines to upright bushy types, and all of them are super easy to grow. They’re another great choice for adding a bit of jungle vibe to your home, and their lush, deep green leaves look beautiful in almost any decor setting.

I love how low-key philodendrons are—whether you hang them or let them climb up a trellis, they’ll keep growing with minimal care. They’re also perfect for adding height and texture to your plant collection.

Care tip: Philodendrons prefer bright, indirect light but can also tolerate low light. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and you’re good to go.

3. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

If you want a plant that’s easy to grow and adds a dreamy, cascading effect, look no further than the pothos. This beauty has heart-shaped leaves that come in various shades of green and even variegated varieties with stunning white or yellow streaks.

I adore how versatile pothos is—it can be hung from a ceiling planter, draped over a bookshelf, or placed in a simple pot and left to trail down a windowsill. Its trailing vines create a relaxed, boho-chic feel, which is perfect if you’re going for cozy vibes at home. It’s also super forgiving if you forget to water it every now and then.

Care tip: Pothos thrives in a variety of lighting conditions, from low light to bright, indirect light. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and it’ll keep growing and glowing!

4. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

If you want a plant that flowers and cleans the air, peace lilies are a top pick. Their lush, dark green leaves paired with elegant white blooms make them a striking addition to any room. I love placing peace lilies in my bedroom or bathroom for a touch of serenity.

What’s great about peace lilies is that they tell you exactly when they need water—their leaves will start to droop, and then perk right back up once watered. They’re a bit more dramatic in that way, but also pretty forgiving.

Care tip: Peace lilies prefer low to moderate indirect light. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, and mist the leaves every so often to maintain humidity.

5. Monstera Deliciosa (Swiss Cheese Plant)

I know the monstera has been a bit of an “it” plant on Instagram, but for good reason—it’s absolutely stunning! With its big, glossy leaves that develop natural splits and holes, monstera adds an instant tropical feel to any room. And despite its exotic look, it’s pretty easy to care for.

I have a monstera sitting in the corner of my living room, and every time I look at it, I feel like my space is so much more lush and lively. It’s one of those plants that makes a bold decor statement all on its own.

Care tip: Monstera likes bright, indirect light and regular watering, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. It’s a fast grower, so be prepared for it to get pretty big—perfect for filling up an empty corner!

6. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

If you’re searching for a plant that will thrive in the darkest corner of your home, the ZZ plant is your go-to. Its shiny, deep green leaves bring a polished, almost sculptural look to any space, making it a perfect decor piece.

What I love most about the ZZ plant is how low-maintenance it is. You can practically forget about it for weeks, and it’ll still look gorgeous. It’s ideal for anyone who loves the look of plants but doesn’t want to fuss over them.

Care tip: ZZ plants do well in low to bright indirect light. Just make sure you don’t overwater it—it prefers its soil to dry out completely before getting a drink.

7. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Spider plants have such a playful, retro vibe, and they’re incredibly easy to grow. With their arching, grassy leaves and tiny offshoots (often called “spiderettes”), they look great on shelves, hanging planters, or even perched on top of furniture.

I adore how lively spider plants look in my home, especially when their little baby plants start to form. They’re perfect for adding a touch of whimsy to your decor. Plus, spider plants are known to help purify the air, so you’re not just adding beauty to your space—you’re improving the air quality too!

Care tip: Spider plants thrive in bright, indirect light, but they can also adapt to lower light conditions. Keep the soil slightly moist, and you’ll have a happy, growing plant.

Incorporating houseplants into your decor doesn’t have to be intimidating. These low-maintenance beauties bring both style and life into your home with minimal effort, creating that cozy, inviting space we all crave. Whether you’re a plant novice or a seasoned green thumb, these plants will thrive—and look fabulous—no matter your level of experience.
